About $5,000… but you want to get a good system, solar heat can make water way too hot if not controlled properly.

You can try to build a solar panel for your hot water heater which will save you a lot of money and save money from your utility bill. It will also make you less dependent from your utility company and is safe for our environment. Go green while saving money. See source for DIY building.

For a 1 family home you will need 7 KWH energy everyday. If you buy used solar panels you can get them for approximately $300

A solar water heater will cost about $4000, but that would be for a location like Hawaii, where you don’t need a big one, and there is never danger of freezing.

There are water heaters that work great, and withstand freezing, too (evacuated tube type), but those cost a little more. Ask a local installer how much it would be.

Unlike a photovoltaic array, the material cost is low compared to the labor, so you could save money installing it yourself, if you have the skills, and the diligence to do quality work that passes code.
