I hаνе heard a lot аbουt solar panels аnd I want tο know hοw thеѕе solar panels works аnd іѕ іt really possible tο generate electricity using solar panels. And whаt іѕ thе cost οf getting a solar panel installed?
Solar panel іѕ mаdе up οf a collection οf special cells known аѕ photovoltaic cells. Thеѕе cells аrе joined together wіth copper wire аnd each οf thеm саn tο generate 5 volts οf electricity. Yου саn install аѕ many cells аѕ per уουr requirement. Thеѕе solar panel generate AC power whісh іѕ converted іn DC bу using аn inverter.
Normal installation cost οf a solar panel аt home іѕ around $5000 bυt іt іѕ trυе thаt іf уου hаνе zeal tο learn уου саn build a solar panel οf уουr οwn within $200. Mаkіng a solar panel іѕ nοt much difficult bυt уου need tο follow a gοοd DIY guide tο dο thаt.

Practically all you ever hear about is solar panels... are they really so much more effective then other methods, such as using energy from the sun to power a steam-powered turbine enclosed in a system with a vacuum so that the water evaporates at a much lower temperature to power a turbine?

Solar cells (panels) collect direct sunlight, converts sunlight into low-voltage DC. The DC could be used directly by DC compliant appliances or passed through a power inverter that converts it to AC for use by AC compliant devices. Often the DC from Sun is stored in batteries for use when Sun is down (nights or cloudy days) . A charge controller is installed between the Solar panels and the batteries to ensure he batteries are not overcharged.

solar panels are a waste, I work for the biggest energy producer on the east coast and we are required by some really dumb laws to have many types of energy sources, fo course the only ones we make money on are coal and nuclear, solar panels we lose a ton of money on because they never make up for the cost it takes to buy them, and technology cannot bring them down because their too expensive even with a gov’t subsidy b\c of the products to make them.
Don’t waste your time with them, if you want to save money get a wood furnace

They consist of a semiconductor junction which has an uneven distribution of charge so it has an electric field in it. When light hits the material, an electron is knocked off from its parent atom and can move around the material. The electric field pushes it in one direction, et voila. You have current!
(it’s most complicated than that, but it needs quantum physics to understand).
In summary, light goes in and DC electricity comes out of the panel.
To use it in your house you will need an inverter as well, which turns it into useful AC. Then you need a way of using up the extra electricity you produce when it’s sunny but you’re not using power Some people use batteries, most people use ‘grid tied’ systems, plug in to the national grid and sell electricity to power companies that you’re not using!
Unfortunately, without major subsidies (like those offered in Germany, Japan and soon the UK), solar panels aren’t likely to be cost effective. In the UK it costs about £5-6,000 to install a kWp of solar power and it will make about £90 of electricity a year. In California it’s sunnier, so would make about £200 of electricity a year, but it’s still very VERY expensive without subsidy.
On the plus side, technology is improving. Thin film technology can be done at half the price, so I’d say hold on until thin film solar cells go up for sale (right now they only sell them to companies for big projects). Prices should drop by at least half in the coming years if they can make enough to sell to households – and at that price it’ll be worth it in places like California.
