    Out in space, one square meter directly facing the Sun would gather 1365 watts; down on the surface, after passing through the atmosphere, in the temperate zone you will seldom get more than about 1000.

    Solar cells have varying efficiencies, but seldom more than about 20%. So a 1 square meter panel would net you about 200 watts output.

    Since there are 746 watts per horsepower, 250 horsepower is 186,500 watts (746 x 250 = 186500) and at 200 watts per square meter, you would need 932.5 square meters (186500 / 200 = 932.5), which is 10,037 square feet. That’s the same as a square 100 feet on one side, which is maybe twice as large as the average American house.

    The typical automobile has about 10 to 15 square meters of upper surface area.
